Antonio and Juan Grijalva decided to apply their lifelong experience in woodworking to an enterprise of their own -Grijalva’s Custom Woodshop- which the brothers opened in Grants, New Mexico in June 1993. Antonio and Juan both studied woodworking together at Grants High School and worked for their father’s construction company. Building on their dreams they went to the NMSU-Grant SBDC and with the help of Clemente Sanchez, Director, applied for a loan under the SBA Low Documentation Loan Program. The Grijalvas were approved for a $60,000 loan, which they’ve used to purchase the land and woodworking shop and make needed improvements.
OPENING THEIR DOORS IN 1993
Since opening their doors, Antonio stated, “We have had to expand and build a 40’ x 60’ addition, along with a finishing room. Our customer base has tripled and so have our sales.” We recently purchased a trailer for moving finished projects to residential and commercial sites. The Grijalvas stay very busy with recent custom woodworking projects to new residential homes being built in Albuquerque. The Grijalvas were also featured in “Homes & Land of Greater Albuquerque”, Vol. 5, Issue 6 and “SuCasa Southwestern Homes”, Vol. 13, Issue 5.
The Grijalva’s company specializes in fine custom work with an emphasis on kitchen and bathroom cabinets, hutches, bookcases, doors and entertainment centers. Besides these types of projects the Grijalvas have also restored a 1904 RCA Victor gramophone, made urn boxes, and they have even made a display case out of wood from an old chicken coop. Their reputation for fine workmanship, willingness to give advice to people on their how-to home projects, and their excellent business location has helped them build a loyal customer base.
When asked about their future plans, the Grijalvas stated, “We are outgrowing our building once more so we are planning to expand our building to meet our capacity. As a result of this expansion, we will also need to hire at least 4 more employees.” The Grijalva’s passion for their work is very much evident.
For further information regarding anything you could dream up and want built , call 505-285-6213 or go by and visit their shop at 701 N 1st St., Grants, NM.
